During the night of October 14–15, the radar system of the Ministry of National Defence detected a group of aerial targets near Snake Island. At 1:34 a.m., one of the drones entered national airspace southeast of Sulina, above Romania’s territorial waters.
The drone was monitored for approximately one minute, after which it disappeared from radar. To verify the situation, two F-18 aircraft belonging to the Spanish Air and Space Force, deployed on combat duty for Enhanced Air Policing, took off from Mihail Kogălniceanu 57th Air Base.
Subsequently, military authorities detected other aerial targets approximately 77 kilometers east of Snake Island. As a precautionary measure, two F-16 aircraft belonging to the Romanian Air Force were scrambled from Fetești 86th Air Base.
The National Military Command Center notified the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations, and at 4:57 a.m. an RO-Alert message was sent to residents of northern and eastern Tulcea County. The air alert ended at 5:46 a.m. The Ministry of National Defence said that no other incursions into Romania’s airspace had been reported.
