The authorities in Greece have announced a proposal for a bill that provides for the use of drones and satellite images to monitor beaches and identify violations of legislation regarding public access and their commercial use.

The measure aims to combat the illegal occupation of beaches with sunbeds and umbrellas, according to the publication Proto Thema.

The legislative project allows for the identification of irregularities from a distance, thus facilitating inspections.

In Greece, beaches are public, and citizens' access is guaranteed by law, establishing that at most one-third of the area of a beach can be occupied by commercial sunbeds. The introduction of monitoring technologies comes as a solution to the difficulties faced by authorities in conducting on-site checks. The project provides for severe penalties for violations, including fines and possible temporary closures of businesses that do not comply with the rules.
