A rare collection of handwritten notes by Mahatma Gandhi was sold for $1.69 million at an auction organized by Saffronart in Mumbai, setting a record for the highest price paid for an Indian historical document.
The notes, which contain 688 messages written between 1944 and 1946, were kept by the family of Anand T Hingorani, a close associate of Gandhi. These writings provide an intimate glimpse into Gandhi's thinking, addressing themes such as truth, non-violence, and self-control.
Dinesh Vazirani, co-founder of Saffronart, emphasized that these messages allow people to perceive Gandhi from a personal perspective. The auction also included other valuable items, such as Gandhi's notes on the Bhagavad Gita and his spinning wheel. The identity of the buyer has not been disclosed, but the notes will remain in India.
