Named "Gus", the impressive T-Rex skeleton was sold at auction for a record sum, being one of the most complete skeletons of its kind in the world, made up of 183 fossilized bones. Discovered in 2021 on a farm in South Dakota, Gus lived during the Maastrichtian period, 72 to 66 million years ago, in a warm climate with high seas and flooded plains. The skeleton is 11.6 meters long and is 63% complete.

The purchase was made by an anonymous buyer, highlighting the growth of the dinosaur fossil market, a controversial trend among paleontologists. Cassandra Hatton from Sotheby's explained that in the United States, fossils are considered private property, and landowners have the right to sell them. The previous record for a fossil sold at auction was set by a stegosaurus, sold for 44.6 million dollars. Currently, Gus's skeleton is on display at the American Museum of Natural History in New York.
