A jersey worn by Michael Jordan in Game 3 of the 1998 NBA Finals was sold Tuesday for $12.26 million at an auction organized by Joopiter, the digital platform founded by musician Pharrell Williams. The transaction set a new record for the most expensive jersey in NBA history and for a Jordan item sold at auction.
The jersey dates from the 1997–98 season, Jordan’s sixth and final campaign with the Chicago Bulls, which became known as “The Last Dance.” The jersey was put up for sale by entrepreneur Ryan Groff, while initial estimates placed its value between $10 million and $15 million.
The final price surpassed the previous record for a Michael Jordan game-worn item: $10.091 million, paid in 2022 for the jersey worn by the basketball player in the first game of the same 1998 NBA Finals.
The sale is also the highest-valued for a garment worn in a basketball game. Across all sports, the jersey ranks second, behind the one worn by Babe Ruth in 1932, which sold in 2024 for $24.12 million.
