Juan Orlando Hernandez, the former president of Honduras, was released on Monday from a U.S. prison, where he was serving a 45-year sentence for drug and firearm trafficking. His wife, Ana Garcia, announced on social media that the release occurred following a commutation granted by American President Donald Trump. She mentioned that after nearly four years of suffering, her husband has regained his freedom.
Hernandez's release comes shortly after the presidential elections in Honduras, where Trump supported the conservative candidate Nasry Asfura, who is in a tight race with the liberal Salvador Nasralla. Hernandez led Honduras from 2014 until 2022 and was arrested and extradited after the end of his term. Although he was convicted in July 2024, he denied the charges.
