The President of Colombia is asking Donald Trump for a temporary suspension of tariffs after the earthquake that killed nearly 300 people.

The President of Colombia, Abelardo de la Espriella, requested on Saturday from his American counterpart, Donald Trump, a temporary suspension of the tariffs imposed on Colombian products, in response to the devastating earthquake with a magnitude of 7.4 that occurred this week.

In a friendly discussion lasting about ten minutes, Espriella highlighted the difficulties faced by Colombian entrepreneurs due to the effects of the earthquake, which caused nearly 300 deaths and the destruction of 13,000 homes.

"I asked him to consider the temporary suspension of the high tariffs affecting Colombian products, to help our entrepreneurs, who are going through a very difficult time due to the effects of the earthquake" wrote the Colombian head of state on X.

The tariffs on Colombian products recently increased from 10% to 12.5%, with the exception of some products such as coffee and oil.

Espriella, who took office from leftist leader Gustavo Petro, joined the "Shield of the Americas," an anti-cartel alliance led by Trump, and intends to collaborate militarily with the United States and Israel to combat guerrillas.
