Alejandro Gil, former Cuban Minister of Economy, has been sentenced to life imprisonment by the Supreme Court of Cuba, having been found guilty of espionage and various economic crimes. His trial was held in secret in Havana, and the court mentioned that he violated procedures related to classified official information, manipulating and misappropriating documents. Additionally, Gil was sentenced to 20 years in prison for corruption, influence peddling, and tax fraud.
The former minister, a close associate of President Miguel Diaz-Canel, was dismissed in February 2024, and his indictment has sparked controversy in the context of the severe economic crisis in Cuba. His trial was marked by a lack of transparency, and his daughter has called for a public trial. Gil has ten days to appeal, and Cuban law provides for an automatic appeal for life sentences.
