Two men from Great Britain have been sentenced for espionage in favor of China

Chung Biu "Bill" Yuen, 66 years old, and Chi Leung "Peter" Wai, 41 years old, were sentenced in a preliminary hearing in the United Kingdom for espionage in favor of China. Their activities, conducted between December 2023 and May 2024, targeted pro-democracy dissidents in the United Kingdom who criticized the authorities in Hong Kong and China.

Wai was also convicted of misconduct in public office, illegally using the Home Office database to obtain sensitive information. The verdict was delivered at the Old Bailey court, with Judge Bobbie Cheema-Grubb emphasizing the seriousness of the threats posed by modern espionage, which includes the intimidation and harassment of dissidents.

Yuen received a sentence of eight years, while Wai received ten years. Commander Helen Flanagan described the activities of the two as "deeply alarming," while the Chinese Embassy in London dismissed the allegations, considering the trial a "political maneuver." The case raises serious questions about national security and the protection of political refugees in the face of increasingly sophisticated foreign interference.
