The Ebola epidemic in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda, which began on May 15, has led to 220 suspected deaths, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). The town of Mongbwalu, located in Ituri province, is the epicenter of the outbreak. The WHO has declared the epidemic, caused by the rare Bundibugyo strain, a public health emergency of international concern.

Doctors are facing attacks on hospitals and patients fleeing, complicating efforts to combat the virus. In recent days, there have been attacks on the hospital in Mongbwalu, where 25 patients have fled. WHO Director Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus mentioned that there are over 900 suspected cases, and the response is delayed.

Uganda has reported two new cases, raising the total number of confirmed cases to seven. Unsafe burials of Ebola victims contribute to the transmission of the virus, and the population's distrust in authorities further complicates the situation. Tedros will visit Congo to coordinate response efforts.
