The level of the Danube has started to rise: Hungary reconnects a turbine at the Paks power plant, which supplies half of the country's energy.

The Hungarian Prime Minister Peter Magyar announced that, due to the Danube's water level rising by 19 centimeters, a second turbine at the Paks nuclear power plant will be reconnected, which has been operating at minimal capacity due to the reduced water flow necessary for cooling the reactors.

Last week, the Danube reached historic low levels, leading to the shutdown of three of the four reactors at the plant, leaving only one turbine operational, which produces 225 megawatts, compared to the normal output of 2,000 megawatts.

In order to bring all four units back online, the Danube must rise by at least 5 centimeters.

The process of reactivating the reactors could take more than a week, provided that the water level does not drop again.
