The nuclear power plant in Paks could return to full capacity by Wednesday, announces the Prime Minister of Hungary.

The Prime Minister of Hungary, Péter Magyar, announced that the Paks nuclear power plant in Hungary restarted reactor 3 on Saturday evening, and the facility could operate at maximum capacity of 2 gigawatts by Wednesday, a day or two earlier than initial estimates, according to Reuters cited by HotNews.

The plant, which produces nearly half of the country's electricity, had to reduce its output to over 10% due to a historic drought and low water levels on the Danube. Currently, the plant generates approximately 800 megawatts, with four out of eight turbines operating, according to the Prime Minister.

The rising water levels on the Danube, the main cooling agent, and engineering works carried out in the area have helped avoid a complete shutdown. The government has implemented short-term solutions, including the construction of a riverbed dam and the sinking of two barges to raise the water level.
