The Greek islands in the northeast Aegean Sea have been affected by devastating floods caused by torrential rains and hailstorms in the last 24 hours. On the island of Lesbos, the town of Kalloni suffered the most severe damage, with streets and dozens of shops flooded after the Tsiknias River overflowed, and water levels reached 1.3 meters in some areas. Intervention teams had to pump water out of buildings, while a historic bridge, Kremastis, was damaged by a container brought by the floods. In Samos, the storm brought torrential rains and large hail, affecting homes and destroying olive crops during the peak harvest season. Local authorities have requested emergency financial assistance for infrastructure repairs and support for affected farmers. Extreme weather phenomena have become increasingly frequent in Greece, attributed to climate change.
