Greece is facing new wildfires, especially in the suburb of Chaidarion, located 11 kilometers west of Athens, where authorities have issued a precautionary evacuation order. Vassilis Vathrakogiannis, the spokesperson for the firefighters, stated that several homes are near the outbreak.
An impressive intervention device, consisting of four water-bombing planes, five helicopters, and over 100 firefighters, has been mobilized. The fires broke out after other outbreaks on the island of Paros and in the Rethymnon area of Crete, where approximately 8,000 people have been evacuated. Currently, authorities have declared a maximum alert status, with fire risk level 5 in Athens and Evia.
Meteorologists forecast strong winds of up to 88 km/h and temperatures of up to 37 degrees Celsius, which complicates the efforts of firefighting teams. Recent fires have destroyed approximately 4,500 hectares of vegetation in Crete.
