A large fire broke out on Saturday afternoon in the Atsitsa region of the Greek island of Skyros, and firefighters continued to battle the flames on Sunday morning.
According to the public television station ERT, strong winds complicated the intervention of rescue crews, who were assisted by dozens of firefighters and vehicles transported to the island by boat.
About a hundred firefighters, supported by 11 aircraft and 5 helicopters, are involved in firefighting operations. The mayor of Skyros, Kyriakos Antonopoulos, stated that the Pefko area has been evacuated as a precautionary measure, but there are currently no other threatened localities.
Strong winds continued to affect the area, but began to weaken at dawn, allowing firefighting planes to intervene. A plume of gray smoke was visible in the sky above the capital Athens, indicating that the fire remains a major concern. Skyros, part of the Sporades archipelago, has about 3,000 residents and is a popular tourist destination.
