Bulgaria, inspired by Germany and Hungary, has requested an exemption from the USA to avoid sanctions imposed on the Russian oil company Lukoil, which owns the only refinery in the country. The Bulgarian Minister of Energy, Jecho Stankov, confirmed that the request was submitted to Washington at the end of October, after the Trump administration announced sanctions against Lukoil and Rosneft, starting from November 21.
The purpose of this request is to ensure the stability and continuity of fuel production in Bulgaria, thus maintaining the level of prices. Until the recent statement, the Bulgarian authorities had not publicly announced the request, and the period for which the exemption was requested was not specified. Germany and Hungary have already obtained exemptions from sanctions, thus facilitating their energy supply.
