The European Commission has confirmed that it received the letter from the leaders of the PPE and Renew Europe groups, Manfred Weber and Valérie Hayer, warning that the Fritz amendment, adopted by the PSD-AUR majority, violates the rule of law and European Union law.

The community executive will send an official response "in due time". Regarding the Integrity Law, a spokesperson for the European Commission stated that the legislative act will be officially evaluated within the sixth and final payment request, which has not yet been submitted by the authorities in Bucharest, according to G4Media.

The amendment aims to retroactively terminate the mandate of the mayor of Timișoara, Dominic Fritz, and has been validated by the Constitutional Court, which has raised concerns among European officials. They are requesting that the release of the final tranche of 770 million euros from the PNRR be conditioned on the respect for the principles of the rule of law. Weber and Hayer emphasize that the amendment is unconstitutional and affects the electoral rights of European citizens. They recommend a detailed assessment of the integrity reform and warn that a clear reaction from the Commission could prompt the Romanian Parliament to reconsider the legislation.
