The European Commission has requested Romania for details about the Integrity Law and the impact of the "Fritz amendment" on local elected officials.

The European Commission has officially requested detailed clarifications from the Romanian authorities regarding the new Integrity Law, which recently came into force, especially concerning the so-called "Fritz amendment," voted by PSD and AUR and declared constitutional by the CCR, according to sources cited by G4Media.

The letter, sent by Ana Gallego, the general director of DG JUST, gives Bucharest a two-week deadline to respond to the questions raised.

The Commission's concerns focus on the impact of the new regulations on local elected officials and dignitaries, considering that the law stipulates the termination of mandates one month after promulgation for individuals with prior decisions of incompatibility or conflict of interest. Brussels is requesting clarifications regarding the compatibility of these regulations with the principles of European law, including legal certainty and non-retroactivity. Additionally, information is requested about the number of affected elected officials, the nature of the sanction, and the possibility of contesting the loss of mandate.
