Bucharest Mayor General Ciprian Ciucu announces that the effects of the Integrity Law will take effect on September 30, from which date mayors definitively convicted of a conflict of interest or declared incompatible with office may lose their mandates.
In a Facebook post, Ciucu claimed that Dominic Fritz, the mayor of Timișoara, and other mayors across the country are set to be affected by the law’s implementation. “Today, Dominic Fritz and other mayors across the country are losing their mandates as a result of a law designed to target a single man. It simply isn’t right!” the Bucharest mayor wrote.
The law was adopted at the beginning of September, after completing the parliamentary procedure. The initiative came from the Government, and it was amended in Parliament through an amendment associated with the case of Dominic Fritz. The provision sparked controversy among elected officials, with USR and PNL lawmakers opposing the amendment.
The Constitutional Court subsequently declared the amendment constitutional, allowing the new legal effects to enter into force. Ciucu criticized the bill from the parliamentary debate stage, arguing that the law directly targets a single person. The implementation of the provisions and the status of the affected mandates will be determined according to the conditions set out in the legislation.
