Dominic Fritz concludes his term as mayor of Timișoara on Wednesday, September 30, halfway through his second term, following the application of the new integrity provisions. Starting October 1, the mayor’s duties are expected to be taken over by Deputy Mayor Ruben Lațcău, while Fritz has announced that he will challenge the termination of his term through legal channels.
Fritz led the local administration for nearly six years. He was elected mayor in 2020, with more than 52% of the vote, and won a new term in 2024. During his first term, Timișoara was the European Capital of Culture in 2023.
The termination of his term comes after the report by the National Integrity Agency concerning an administrative conflict of interest was definitively upheld by the court. The mayor argued that the legislative amendments represented a “political attack” and that the law was being applied “retroactively,” but the Constitutional Court upheld the challenged provisions.
Ruben Lațcău will take over the mayor’s duties, while Deputy Mayor Paula Romocean and City Administrator Matei Creiveanu will continue to be part of the leadership team. Fritz stated that the administration’s projects would move forward and that he would continue his activity at the helm of USR.
