Dominic Fritz said goodbye to the Local Council and announces that he will challenge the termination of his mandate in court

Dominic Fritz attended his final meeting of the Timișoara Local Council as mayor and thanked the councillors for their cooperation over the past several years. He announced that he would use all legal avenues to challenge the termination of his mandate, which he considers “illegitimate” and “illegal”.

The mayor’s mandate is due to end on Wednesday, September 30, under the new provisions concerning elected officials definitively declared incompatible or found to have a conflict of interest before Law No. 180/2026 entered into force. Under the transitional rules, the mandates and positions concerned automatically end 30 days after the law enters into force.

“We will certainly see each other again, including in this room. We will see from which positions and offices,” Fritz told the local councillors.

At the end of August, the National Integrity Agency announced that it was beginning checks for the effective implementation of the new law. The regulation changes the sanctions applied in integrity cases: they are no longer limited to fines, but may lead to the termination of a mandate or public office. Until now, financial sanctions in such cases ranged from approximately 400 to 8,000 lei.
