Valérie Hayer, the president of Renew Europe, stated on Wednesday that the Senate of Romania has the responsibility to reject the ANI law in the form that includes an amendment targeting the mayor of Timișoara, Dominic Fritz. Hayer emphasized that, otherwise, the funds from the PNRR should not be disbursed, stating that the European Union should not finance political vendettas that contradict European standards.
She also mentioned that USR proposed a version of the ANI law that meets the necessary conditions for the PNRR. The statements come after the PPE and Renew Europe called on the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, to block the tranche of 770 million euros for Romania due to issues related to the rule of law.
Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan stated that the integrity law must be voted on, even with the Fritz amendment, in order to meet the PNRR milestone, while the leader of the AUR senators announced that he would not participate in the vote on the law.
