Amazon has officially confirmed the elimination of 14,000 administrative positions worldwide as part of a restructuring aimed at streamlining the company. Beth Galetti, vice president of the Human Resources division, emphasized that these cuts are necessary to reduce bureaucracy and reallocate resources. While some departments will continue to hire, others will face reductions, resulting in a global decrease of about 10% of the 350,000 office positions.
The announcement comes in the context of estimates that Amazon will lay off a total of 30,000 employees in the coming months, mostly from support and management functions. This is the largest layoff campaign since the wave in winter 2022-2023, when 27,000 employees were laid off. The first layoff notifications are expected to begin on Tuesday, with other departures scheduled for January.
CEO Andy Jassy mentioned that the development of artificial intelligence will influence the reduction of office staff in the coming years. Amazon, the second largest employer in the U.S., is accelerating automation, raising questions about the future of the workforce. Other technology companies, such as Microsoft and Meta, have also announced significant staff reductions.
