An 89-year-old man was arrested after he opened fire in central Athens, injuring five people in two separate incidents. His lawyer, Vassilis Noulezas, stated that the attacker acted out of desperation, protesting against the Greek public services.
The incident began in a branch of the EFKA social insurance agency, where he injured an employee, then moved to a court, where he lightly injured four clerks. The man, who worked for 40 years as an engineer in Chicago, had previously been hospitalized in a psychiatric clinic and had his request for an additional pension denied.
He was charged with attempted murder and illegal possession of a weapon. The incident sparked protests from EFKA employees, who highlighted security issues and the public's frustration with the deficient public services. The Greek Minister for Citizen Protection acknowledged the security gaps but stated that Greece remains a safe country.
