On Friday morning, an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.5 affected the southwest of Mexico, with the epicenter near the city of San Marcos, in the state of Guerrero. The quake occurred at 07:58 local time and prompted the evacuation of residents from the capital, including President Claudia Sheinbaum, who had to interrupt a press conference. Although no serious damage was reported in Mexico City, authorities confirmed the death of a 60-year-old man and a woman of about 50, who were victims of collapsing buildings.
Approximately 50 houses in San Marcos were destroyed, and 12 people were injured. The National Seismological Service recorded 546 aftershocks of low intensity, but no tsunami alert was issued. Mexico, located on five tectonic plates, is extremely vulnerable to earthquakes, given its history of devastating quakes.
