In an internal presentation of the European Union's cybersecurity structure, obtained by POLITICO, it was revealed that EU officials have been victims of "spearphishing" cyberattacks. These attacks, carried out through state-sponsored campaigns, aimed to take control of the messaging accounts of senior officials. This is the first time that a European authority has officially linked these attacks to a foreign government, indicating Russia as the main source.

The document mentions the use of social engineering techniques, with personalized messages to manipulate victims into accessing suspicious links. Since the beginning of the year, eight significant incidents have been reported in EU institutions. The Netherlands and Germany have warned about the risks of these attacks, which target influential individuals in politics and the media. A major vulnerability identified is the lack of a common system for exchanging sensitive documents between EU institutions, thus complicating information protection. The European Commission has not provided details about its cybersecurity measures.
