A devastating earthquake of magnitude 7.8 occurred in General Santos City, Philippines, on June 8, approximately 20 km from Sarangani province.
Drone images show houses and buildings leaning, with walls and roofs collapsed. The earthquake also generated tsunami warnings in several countries, and tremors were felt strongly in Mindanao and as far as 420 km away, in Manado, Indonesia. So far, at least 35 people have died and 144 have been injured, mostly due to falling debris and landslides.
This tragedy comes eight months after a 6.9 magnitude earthquake near Cebu, which caused 79 deaths, being the deadliest earthquake in the Philippines in the last 12 years. Two strong earthquakes struck Mindanao two weeks after that event, the strongest having a magnitude of 7.4.
