A strong earthquake with a magnitude of 7.3 struck southern Mexico, near the border with Guatemala, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). The quake occurred off the Pacific Ocean at a depth of 15 km, recorded at local time 09:48 (17:48 in Romania), about 50 kilometers from the coastal city of Tapachula in the state of Chiapas.

A 5.3 aftershock followed the main earthquake. Although a tsunami alert was activated, authorities in Mexico, Guatemala, and El Salvador have not reported any significant damage so far. The American tsunami warning system issued a warning about possible dangerous waves along coasts within a radius of up to 300 km from the epicenter. The earthquake was also felt in the state of Oaxaca in Mexico.
