The European Commission has sent a team from the Directorate General for Migration and Home Affairs to the Spanish autonomous city of Ceuta, located in northern Africa, to assess the migration situation.
The European Commissioner for Home Affairs, Magnus Brunner, announced that the team will analyze developments and local needs, providing the necessary support. Brunner mentioned that the EU, together with the agencies Frontex, Europol, and EUAA, is ready to intensify this assistance at the request of the Spanish government.
Currently, Frontex has 30 employees in Ceuta. This mission comes after a migration episode in July, when over 70,000 people crossed illegally from Morocco into Ceuta, generating a humanitarian crisis and tensions among European partners. Recent discussions have focused on ways to prevent such situations in the future.
