Spain requested on Friday the assistance of the European Border and Coast Guard Agency (Frontex) to manage the migrant crisis in the North African enclave of Ceuta.

The request was made by the Minister of the Interior, Fernando Grande-Marlaska, nearly a month after approximately 72,000 migrants entered the territory from Morocco, causing a critical situation.

Authorities estimate that between 5,000 and 8,000 migrants remain in Ceuta, and following the assault on July 30, 82 migrants died on the Spanish side of the border.

Spain also requested 10 additional officers from Frontex to verify the status of the migrants.

Tensions in Ceuta have risen, with residents protesting for the departure of the migrants, and their tents being attacked and set on fire.

Recently, 12 migrants were arrested after a violent incident, and eleven were expelled from the territory.
