The spokesperson for the European Commission, Guillaume Mercier, announced that discussions with Spain for additional financial support in Ceuta are taking place 'at a sustained pace', after 72,000 migrants have entered the enclave from Morocco.
The Commission has received an assessment of needs from Spain and is analyzing the request, which is to be formalized. The new support could include equipment for border management, humanitarian and medical assistance, considering the large number of migrants remaining in Ceuta, including 860 unaccompanied minors. NGOs warn that institutions are not prepared for a crisis of this magnitude, and the organization Luna Blanca has already distributed over 12,000 meals.
The European Commissioner for Home Affairs, Magnus Brunner, confirmed that the EU has allocated 114 million euros to Spain for strengthening reception and asylum capacities in Ceuta. He emphasized Europe's solidarity with Spain in the face of this crisis.
