The summer solstice, the phenomenon that marks the beginning of astronomical summer in the northern hemisphere, will occur in 2026 on June 21 at 11:24 AM. On this day, the Sun reaches its highest point in the sky, providing the longest period of natural light in the year, over 15 hours in Romania.
Although it brings the maximum amount of light, the solstice also marks the beginning of the process by which days start to gradually shorten, and nights become longer. The changes are hard to observe at first, but they become more evident throughout the summer, until the autumn equinox.
The phenomenon is caused by the tilt of the Earth's axis, which allows the Sun's rays to fall directly on the northern hemisphere. Throughout history, the summer solstice has been celebrated through numerous traditions and rituals dedicated to the sun, fertility, and abundance.
In Romania, this period is associated with the celebration of Sânzienele, while in other European countries, such as Sweden, it is marked by Midsommar, one of the most important festivities of the year, characterized by dances, songs, and outdoor parties. These customs reflect the important role that the summer solstice has played in organizing agricultural activities and in the life of communities over time.
