The summer solstice on June 21 marks the beginning of astronomical summer in the northern hemisphere, when the Sun reaches its highest point in the sky, resulting in the longest day and the shortest night of the year. The word 'solstice' comes from Latin, meaning 'pause' of the Sun, which is tilted the most towards the Earth. In contrast, in the southern hemisphere, the shortest day of the year occurs, signaling the start of winter. Throughout history, solstices have been celebrated through festivals and monuments, such as Stonehenge. The summer solstice is linked to folk traditions, such as the celebration of Sânziene, considered a magical night, favorable for love spells. It is also associated with the Nativity of Saint John the Baptist, celebrated on June 24. These traditions reflect ancient beliefs about the energy and power of the summer solstice.
