The USR candidate for the position of general mayor of the Capital, Cătălin Drulă, states that he is not "a fan" of the current administrative organization of the municipality of Bucharest, pointing out that much larger cities than the capital of Romania do not have sectors with fiscal autonomy.
"If a city that is four times larger, with 9 million inhabitants, I believe, and four times larger in area, can be led by a single mayor, I believe that the Bucharest-Ilfov region, I would even go further than the borders of Bucharest, can be led in a unitary manner. Now, if there is a role for administrative subdivisions, there are such models in Europe, Brussels has communes, Vienna has a kind of districts, Paris has arrondissements, it is a discussion, but not fiscally autonomous. They can only be local, zonal functions of these local leaders, while the city has a single leadership because that ensures coherence in the development of transport systems, heating, and planning over large areas. Think about Piaţa Unirii, where four sectors meet. How could an urban regeneration project look if it had to be led by a sector?" argued Cătălin Drulă on Monday evening, on Digi 24.
