Spirit Airlines, a low-cost carrier, announced the cessation of operations due to the doubling of fuel prices, which led to the company's collapse. Approximately 15,000 employees and collaborators are affected, and hundreds of thousands of passengers have been left without scheduled flights.
The global aviation industry is facing pressures due to rising fuel prices, caused by tensions in the Strait of Hormuz and port blockades in Iran.
United Airlines, Delta Air Lines, JetBlue Airways, and Southwest Airlines have introduced capped fares for rescheduling flights, also requiring proof of the initial booking with Spirit. Additionally, free seats are being made available for the company's employees so they can get home.
The collapse is the first of its kind in the U.S. in the last two decades, and Spirit Airlines had a 5% market share before the pandemic. The company attempted to secure a $500 million financing package but was rejected by creditors. Furthermore, the blocking of the merger with JetBlue Airways contributed to Spirit's financial difficulties.
