Romania is facing a historic opportunity to become a European hub for energy security, but it fails to capitalize on its resources in the Black Sea, according to an analysis by the Smart Energy Association (AEI).
The president of AEI, Dumitru Chisăliță, emphasizes that Romania is not ignored, but rather complicit in its own irrelevance, having opportunities for collaboration with other European states that are seeking energy resources. Chisăliță states that Romania suffers from institutional inertia and strategic timidity, which hinders the development of a relevant player status in the European Union. The current geopolitical context, marked by the war in Ukraine, offers Romania a window of opportunity, but the lack of a coherent strategy and the courage to act keeps it in the shadows.
The expert proposes a strategic framework based on four pillars: energy autonomy, regional infrastructure, strengthening strategic partnerships, and economic competitiveness. If Romania does not assume the role of a leader in the energy sector, it risks becoming a mere supplier of raw materials and losing influence in Europe. This is a crucial opportunity, and the actions taken in the coming years will determine its future in the European energy context.
