UN and WMO warn: El Niño will amplify extreme weather phenomena

The United Nations and the World Meteorological Organization have issued a warning regarding the preparation of countries for the El Niño phenomenon, which is currently in full formation.

This climatic phenomenon, associated with global warming, can amplify extreme weather events, including in Europe and Romania. El Niño occurs in the Pacific Ocean when surface waters warm above normal values, and to be officially declared, the water temperature must exceed the average by 2 degrees Celsius.

This warming transfers energy to the atmosphere, altering air circulation and generating global effects such as droughts, heatwaves, and violent storms. Experts predict a warmer summer in Romania, with prolonged drought and extreme storms. Specialists emphasize that El Niño occurs during a period of extreme heat, and the effects could be more severe than in the past, requiring states to strengthen preventive measures.

The phenomenon will also influence winter, which could be mild and snowless in Europe.
