The Pacific Ocean is experiencing unprecedented warming, with water temperatures exceeding 30°C for the first time. Under these conditions, researchers warn that an extreme phenomenon, dubbed “Super El Niño,” is forming and could amplify the effects of extreme weather worldwide.

The new development is that the core of the very warm waters is no longer concentrated near the coasts of South America, as usually occurs during El Niño, but has shifted toward the central Pacific. According to specialists, this warm area could persist for longer, increasing its impact on the climate.

El Niño alters the circulation of air masses and ocean currents, with effects felt thousands of kilometers away. Global warming caused by human activity may intensify the phenomenon, favoring severe droughts in Indonesia and torrential rain, flooding, and other episodes of extreme weather in the Americas and East Africa.

Changes in Pacific temperatures are being closely monitored because the phenomenon’s intensity and duration could influence the global climate in the period ahead. Specialists believe that such events are becoming increasingly frequent as the planet warms.
