Two of the three minors involved in an attack on a taxi driver in Târgu Mureș have been placed in preventive custody for 30 days, being accused of attempted murder.

The incident occurred when the 54-year-old taxi driver was attacked with a knife by the three young men, aged 13, 15, and 16, after they refused to pay for the ride. The taxi driver managed to call 112, and the police and medical team intervened at the scene. The two arrested minors were initially detained for 24 hours, and the case was taken over by the Prosecutor's Office attached to the Mureș Tribunal. The 13-year-old minor cannot be punished under the law, and the Child Protection Agency in Mureș has been informed about the incident. The investigation continues.

The incident occurred at a time when there has been much public emotion regarding how Romania handles criminal offenses committed by minors under 14, following the murder in Cenei, Timiș County, where a 15-year-old, Mario, was killed, and among the alleged criminals is a 13-year-old boy. The tragedy has generated a public petition to lower the age of criminal responsibility, despite the fact that many specialists and child protection organizations warn that such a decision would exacerbate the problem and that there is no necessary infrastructure for the protection and rehabilitation of minors who have committed criminal acts.
