The 13-year-old student who attacked a teacher and two classmates with a knife on Monday at a middle school in Bistrița allegedly acted with premeditation, most likely for racial reasons, according to the chief prosecutor of the Prosecutor’s Office attached to the Bistrița-Năsăud Tribunal.
Investigators say the teenager came from home carrying a pocketknife, a balaclava, a military-style helmet and gloves. He put them on in the school bathroom, then went to the classroom where the student he intended to attack was studying. Prosecutors claim the boy considered him Indian because of his skin color, although there had been no previous conflicts between the two.
The mathematics teacher was attacked in the hallway, while a student who intervened to help her suffered a head injury. The initially targeted student sustained a superficial injury to his back. The attacker was disarmed and restrained by the school guard and a physical education teacher.
In the bathroom where he prepared, investigators found messages in English and legionary and far-right symbols. Prosecutors cannot yet confirm whether a radicalization process took place, but they say the teenager showed no remorse.
The minor is hospitalized in a child psychiatry clinic in Cluj-Napoca. He cannot be held criminally liable, and the case is being investigated as attempted murder by the Prosecutor’s Office attached to the Bistrița-Năsăud Tribunal.
