The Holy Archangels Michael and Gabriel are considered the leaders of the angels and guides of souls to heaven, being celebrated on November 8. Archangel Gabriel is the messenger of good tidings, while Michael fights against the rebellious angels. The celebration has origins from the 5th century, when a church dedicated to Michael was consecrated. This is the last major celebration before the Christmas Fast. In popular tradition, the archangels assist in the Last Judgment and purify sins. Customs such as offering wine and cozonac, consuming fish, and avoiding work in the household are also observed. November 8 also marks a transition between autumn and winter, with beliefs related to the sudden arrival of winter. It is a day when quarrels are not recommended.
