The Dormition Fast of the Mother of God began on July 31 and will end on August 14, one day before the feast of the Dormition of the Mother of God. Usually, the fast starts on August 1, but this year it was moved forward due to the day of the leaving of the world. During this period, it is recommended to read the Akathist of the Mother of God daily. From a dietary perspective, the fast is considered easier than Great Lent, but stricter than other fasts. On Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, one fasts until 3:00 PM, while on Tuesdays and Thursdays, boiled vegetables are consumed without oil. On Saturdays and Sundays, there is a dispensation for oil and wine, and on the feast of the Transfiguration, on August 6, there is a dispensation for fish. In the first centuries of Christianity, the duration of the fast varied depending on local traditions, and the current form was established in the 12th century by a synod in Constantinople. The Dormition of the Mother of God is the oldest feast dedicated to Saint Virgin Mary, with evidence of worship beginning in the 5th century.
