Ferragosto, the national holiday of Italy, is celebrated on August 15 and coincides with the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. It marks the peak of summer and vacation time, and most Italians go on holiday, leaving the towns almost deserted.

Experts warn that, in the period after Ferragosto, Italy will be almost blocked for two weeks, and tourists may encounter difficulties. Although major tourist attractions remain open, family restaurants, artisan workshops, and neighborhood services frequently close, and public transport operates on a reduced schedule.

Tourists are advised to make reservations for meals, to purchase water and snacks in advance, and to check the schedule of tourist sites and pharmacies. This holiday, although full of tradition, can bring inconveniences for those who are not familiar with local customs.
