Michael McGrath, the European Commissioner for Democracy and the Rule of Law, stated that respect for the rule of law is crucial for access to European Union funds, in the context of the elections in Hungary scheduled for April 12. Viktor Orbán's Fidesz party is in second place in the polls, with a nine-point gap from the Tisza party. Orbán has been a constant obstacle for the EU, recently blocking a loan for Ukraine, which has sparked the anger of European leaders. The President of the European Council, António Costa, stated that Hungary's actions are unacceptable. There have also been accusations that Budapest has maintained ties with Moscow throughout the war in Ukraine. If Orbán wins the elections, European officials expect an intensification of discussions on how to address the relationship with Hungary, considering the crossing of some acceptable limits.
