Romania ranks first in the European Union regarding deaths from road accidents, with 78 fatalities per million inhabitants, according to an analysis by the European Commission. In 2024, 19,940 people died in road accidents across the EU, with Bulgaria in second place with 74 deaths per million inhabitants. In contrast, Sweden and Denmark had the lowest rates, with 20 and 24 deaths per million, respectively. In a recent intervention, Chief Commissioner Bogdan Oproiu mentioned that, although Romania returned to first place in 2024, road safety has improved positively compared to the years 2017 and 2018, when up to 98 deaths per million were recorded. In the first nine months of the year, there were 2,939 serious accidents, resulting in 940 deaths, which represents a 13% decrease compared to the same period last year. The main causes of accidents are inappropriate speed, pedestrian indiscipline, and failure to yield. Oproiu emphasized the importance of road education and announced initiatives to improve road safety, including a traffic monitoring project.
