Two employees of Frankfurt Airport have died from malaria, a rarely encountered disease in Germany, after an outbreak infected six employees.
Health authorities suspect that the mosquitoes may have been "brought in by a plane," triggering the outbreak detected for the first time in July.
Currently, traps for mosquitoes have been installed, and the captured insects will be analyzed to determine their species and origin.
Although the risk to the population in Frankfurt is considered very low, authorities encourage employees to consult a doctor if they exhibit symptoms.
The Robert Koch Institute has emphasized that malaria mainly affects people traveling in endemic areas and that transmission in airports is extremely rare. The last case of malaria transmitted at a German airport was recorded in Frankfurt in 2023. Malaria is a serious disease, but it can be prevented and treated.
