Experts from the Rewilding Romania association have observed a moose (Alces alces) in Hunedoara County, an important discovery for the wildlife of Romania. The footage of the animal has been posted on social media, and the team has been mobilized to verify and document the presence of the species.
Although it is not known where the moose came from, it is known that there are stable populations of moose in Ukraine and Poland, and the animal could be in transit. The executive director of the Romanian Society of Wildlife, Alexandru Bulacu, emphasized that it is unlikely that the moose comes from a natural wild environment, suggesting that it may have accidentally escaped from a reserve. Historically, there have been populations of moose in northern Romania, coming from Ukraine, locally known as "plotuni". Rewilding Romania will continue to monitor the area and collaborate with authorities for the protection of this specimen.
