Nicușor Dan, editorial in The Washington Times on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks: “When all Romanians were Americans for a day”

President Nicușor Dan published on Thursday, in the conservative publication The Washington Times, an editorial dedicated to commemorating 25 years since the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. Under the title “When All Romanians Were Americans for a Day,” the head of state discusses Romania’s solidarity with the United States and the shared values of the two countries.

Nicușor Dan argues that the attacks demonstrated that the freedom and security of democratic societies cannot be defended individually. He states that Romania responded to the U.S. appeal after 2001 and, starting in 2002, took part in international operations and missions. The president recalls the sacrifice of Romanian service members who never returned home.

In his message to America and President Donald Trump, Nicușor Dan says that Romania is a reliable ally and that the bilateral relationship has a special significance, built on shared history and experiences. He praises the U.S. role in ending the Second World War and removing the Iron Curtain.

The president also mentions the support provided in 2026 for the American operational requirements of Operation “Epic Fury,” through Mihail Kogălniceanu Air Base. The editorial concludes with an appeal for solidarity, vigilance, and the defense of freedom in the face of terrorism.
