Nuclearelectrica has announced that it will import electricity from Ukraine, through Energocom in the Republic of Moldova, to cover the production deficit caused by the shutdown of Unit 1 of the Cernavodă Nuclear Power Plant.
The company emphasizes that the purchase is made with the support of Energocom and is based on a Memorandum of Understanding signed in 2023, which aims to strengthen energy resilience between Romania and the Republic of Moldova. Nuclearelectrica highlights the importance of solid partnerships in the context of severe drought and the low level of the Danube, which affect energy production.
Interim Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan has declared a national state of alert for the month of August, as a result of extreme weather conditions that have significantly reduced electricity production capacity. Authorities have adopted measures to maintain the operation of Unit 2 of the Nuclear Power Plant and to increase energy imports.
