Ilie Bolojan: National state of alert for the month of August due to severe drought and decrease in electricity production

The interim Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan announced that Romania is in a state of national alert throughout the month of August, due to the decrease in electricity production caused by severe drought and the low water levels of the Danube and rivers.

Ilie Bolojan emphasized the risk of shutting down the second reactor of the Cernavodă Nuclear Power Plant, which would lead to a loss of approximately 20% of the national energy production. Additionally, the interim prime minister pointed out that the Danube's water levels are at half of normal, and the production capacity of hydroelectric plants is limited.

The government has requested support from Ukraine to increase energy production and has authorized the operation of internal capacities at maximum. Funds have also been allocated to maintain the water level necessary for cooling the reactors. The prime minister called on citizens and companies to reduce energy consumption during peak hours, considering the estimated increase in demand.

We remind that on July 28, 2026, Unit 1 of the Cernavodă Nuclear Power Plant was shut down in a controlled manner and disconnected from the National Energy System due to the unprecedented low level of the Danube.
